Gregory J. Benton
Chief of Police

February 23, 2015

Dear Citizen,

The Dothan Police Department is a nationally accredited police agency through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA)

CALEA was established in 1979 and accredited its first law enforcement agency in 1984

CALEA accredited agencies in order to achieve and maintain the coveted status of accreditation must meet and adhere to what are considered best practices in law enforcement

Dothan Police Department is one of a handful of agencies in Alabama that has accomplished the honor of being accredited

The backbone for any police agency desiring accreditation is the development of comprehensive, well thought out written directives

These directives in association with the necessary required reports and analysis’s assist the Chief in managing the agency

Furthermore CALEA accreditation requires a preparedness program to be put in place so the agency is prepared for natural and man-made disasters

Accreditation is focused on improving community relations, accountability, reducing liability risk exposure and moving an agency toward professional excellence
………………………………………………..
Accreditation is focused on

IMPROVING COMMUNITY RELATIONS,

ACCOUNTABILITY,

… and MOVING an AGENCY TOWARD PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE
………………………………………………..
The Dothan Police Department was awarded its initial award in July 2012

CALEA requires that agencies submit an annual report and then every three years an assessment team from CALEA visits the agency to conduct an on-site inspection to confirm the agency is continuing to provide law enforcement services that meet the standards as developed by CALEA

The Dothan Police Department will be undergoing its first re-accreditation March 22-24, 2015

During this three day process assessors will review all of the department’s operational areas as well and interview department employees and community

There are two opportunities for your input, positive or negative, regarding our agency and its performance
……………………………………………….
THERE ARE TWO OPPORTUNITIES FOR CITIZEN INPUT,

POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE,

REGARDING OUR AGENCY AND ITS PERFORMANCE
………………………………………………..

Hey Backass’ard Alabama RedNeck:

Sugar is for making Paper,
Not for pouring in my FUEL

Aren’t you smarter than a 5th-Grader ?
Maybe you didn’t make it that far in SCHOOL ?

Or did you just play hooky ?
Because you thought that skipping school was COOL ?

Pouring sugar in a gas tank,
Just means you’re a Backass’ard Alabama FOOL

And you were just their childish TOOL

If you’d bothered to attend your classes,
You’d know the Insurance Companies’ Golden RULE

But I guess your Head and A$$ engaged,

And now your brain is all too full,
Of Dirty, Dirty, Dirty South STOOL

Did you see my Enterprise insurance rental ?
‘Cause it was amazing, extremely, really quite COOL

Remember, you can soar with the Eagles,
Or graze in the grass with the MULES

My neighbor says Hi,
He’ll light you up if ya think I’m too CRUEL

‘Cause Texans know how to play Dirty POOL

5. They left evidence

The Shortest 6 Miles in Alabama, and Maybe the Entire United States of America

Dothan 24 Alabama
The Shortest 6 Miles in Alabama, and Maybe the Entire United States of America

In Dale County Alabama, Daleville City Limits, just South of the Highway 85 and Highway 134 intersection, is a Road Sign on the right side of the highway, indicating that Dothan, Alabama is 24 miles away

If you drive South on Highway 85 towards Highway 84, and get in the left lane to head East on 84, once you make the turn, less than a mile from the “Dothan 24” miles, is a sign indicating that Dothan is 18 miles away

This must be the shortest 6 miles in Alabama

If you’ve ever wanted to run 6 miles in a mile and set a new record, this is the place to do it

Congratulations, Alabama Department of Transportation
Dothan 18 Alabama
